Executive summary. Edit the permission matrix for a custom role, entirely from the keyboard if you prefer.

Definition

A role is a named set of permissions; changing the role changes what everybody holding it can do.

What to do

Open Settings, then Roles, and choose the custom role to change.

Work across the permission matrix. Every cell is reachable from the keyboard, which matters when your hands are already on one.

Save. The change applies to everybody holding that role, not only to new members.

What you cannot change

The built in roles are fixed. If a built in role is close to what you want, create a custom role rather than expecting to edit the original, so the standard meaning of Owner or Billing does not quietly differ between organizations.

Frequently asked questions

Does a change take effect immediately for people already signed in?

Yes. Permissions are read from the record on each request rather than from the session, so a change lands on somebody's next click rather than their next sign in.
