EPCIS is a GS1 standard for sharing visibility event data about objects and supply-chain activities.
Event data describes observed activity
An event answers what object was observed, where, when, and in what business context. Its usefulness rests on the identifiers, the event semantics, and the quality of capture at the source.
An event stream records what was observed. Showing what a pharmacy or distributor did about it takes records of your own.
Define the mapping
Define how incoming event identifiers resolve to internal product, location, and transaction records. Ambiguous mappings should surface as exceptions. A best-effort match that cannot be explained later is worse than a queue item.
Version the mappings and validate sample payloads with each partner. Interoperability usually fails on valid structures that carry different business assumptions.
